Normal academic progress toward graduation is the completion of 67% of courses attempted and a GPA of 2.0.

At the close of the Fall and Spring terms, the Academic Review Committee reviews the progress of every student who does not meet the cumulative grade point (GPA) minimum standard, is on academic probation, or is otherwise identified as not making satisfactory academic progress.

The cumulative GPA refers to the student’s Eckerd’s College GPA only. Mentors, instructors, and student personnel staff may be consulted. The Academic Review Committee may place on warning or dismiss any student who in its judgment is not making satisfactory academic progress as defined below.

Academic Review Committee

The membership of the Academic Review Committee is as follows: the Dean of Student Success; the Registrar; the Director of Financial Aid, and the Dean of Students.

Academic Warning

A student whose Eckerd College cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 or who has failed to successfully complete at least 67% of courses attempted is placed on academic warning. Students placed on academic warning are notified of this action by the Academic Review Committee and are required to meet with the Center for Academic Excellence to develop an Academic Recovery Plan. Students may enroll in up to four 14-week length courses during the term they are on warning.

Satisfactory Completion Rate

Student must successfully complete (D or better) 67% of courses attempted. Also, students may at- tempt no more than 150% of the total number of courses required for a degree. This means that the maximum number of attempted courses cannot exceed 54. Students failing to meet either of these criteria are placed on academic warning.

Dismissal

A student whose Eckerd College cumulative GPA is below the minimum standard for the third consecutive Fall or Spring semester or who has otherwise been identified by the Academic Review Committee as not making satisfactory academic progress will be dismissed for at least one semester. Students dismissed for academic reasons are notified in advance of the next regular term by the Academic Review Committee. This notice also advises the student whether an, if so, when and how the student might be considered for readmission. Students may appeal a semester dismissal under extenuating circumstances. Students dismissed at the end of the Fall Term who are registered in a Winter Term course are permitted to remain and complete the Winter Term course in which they are enrolled prior to being dismissed.

Return to Good Standing

A student is removed from academic warning upon attaining the minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA. 

Second Dismissal

If a student is readmitted after dismissal, and dismissed again, the second dismissal is final. Any exception to this policy must be approved by the Dean of Faculty.
