MAJOR

Music majors must complete a minimum of 12 courses in the following categories: music theory, music history and criticism, performance, and senior comprehensive experience, including:

Two (2) music theory courses:

• MU 111A Music Sound and Structure (or equivalent intro music theory course)

• MU 112A Popular Music Theory

• MU 113 Music, Sound and Structure II (or equivalent intermediate theory course)

• MU 125A Global Approach to Music Theory

Students entering with the equivalent of an AP score of 4 or 5 or college level theory courses may substitute electives.

Two (2) music history & criticism courses from among the following:

• MU 131/231 Music Special Topics

• MU 266A Music Projects I

• MU 235A History of Rock

• MU 250A Performing Arts Entrepreneurship and Music Business

• MU 256G World Music

Two (2) year-long performance courses from among the following: (courses in this category consist of 2 semesters for 3.5 Credit Hours):

Ensembles

• MU 245A Choral Literature & Ensemble

• MU 246 Jazz Combo

• MU 247 Orchestra MU 248 Rock Lab

Students will complete 20 hours of Reflective Service Learning over the course of two semesters through the ensembles.

Students majoring or minoring in Music must complete all music courses with a grade of C‑ or better.

Transfer students and students participating in off‑campus programs may petition for alternatives to these specifications, including credit for AP Music (AP score of 4 or 5), or college level general music may be used as a credit. Please consult the Music faculty to determine where the credit is best applied.

Reflective Service Learning is recommended through ensemble courses.

MINOR
